My latest collection of writing, In The Wind These Words has recently passed the 500 page mark. My latest, Tattered Jacket is a great example of Following The Pen as I started with the thought of the jacket collar turn up against the wind. That thought was inspired by a line from a Simon & Garfunkel song, The Sound of Silence. What you read is where that thought took me.

Tattered Jacket

2.17.2018

I pull my tattered jacket close

Hunker down for another

Cold and lonely night

Knees to chest

Collar up

Head down

Don’t want to see my breath

It’s a reminder of my plight

A reminder of how I have

Hunkered down for another

Cold and lonely night

But I’ve made it all wrong

So it’s all up to me

To step into the warmth of the light

I’ve made it wrong

Now it’s up to me

To take the steps

To make things right

As the cold night’s wind

Knives against my back, it

Is a blessing to have

This tattered old jacket

There was a time

I did not appreciate

All that I had

But now it is not

Now I cherish

This tattered old jacket I’ve got

But I’d give it up

If it is what I’d have to do

I’d give it all up

Just to get back you

You see I’ve made it all wrong

So it’s all up to me

To step into the warmth of the light

To take the steps

To make things right

‘Til then I pull my tattered jacket close

Hunker down for another

Cold and lonely night
