Though no reference to the face cards of a deck, I pictured them when I wrote this. As I have said before, I love a good joker.

I imagine there have been instances of kingdom's where this storyline would have been in sync with their realities.

Behind the Jester’s Grin

10.31.2009

Knights and knaves

Kings and slaves

And the world that lies between

“The further from the top

The shorter the drop.”

To the maiden, said the Queen

No common ground

Can ‘ere be found

Save that beneath his feet

He clowns around

But he’s no clown

No crown upon his seat

They laugh loud at him

Yet he laughs louder

Behind his jester grin

Because none comprehend

None so well as him

The state that they are in

In irony, it is no joke

The innocent, the honest bloke

Tis the Jester’s hands are clean

His words I fear,

You must listen, not hear

To fathom what they mean

They laugh at him

As he tells it like it is

The oracle trapped within

Medieval showbiz

He mocks their every idiocy

Smacks’m hard with their reality

Yet they don’t know they’ve been hit

He sees them all

For who they are

So no desire to climb so far

He’s happy where he is

With bells on shoes

And colourful hues

On his jester motley hat

The Jester sings

His jester song

All happy where he’s at

Knights and knaves

Kings and slaves

And the world that lies between

“The further from the top

The shorter the drop.”

To the maiden, said the Queen

No common ground

Can ‘ere be found

Save that beneath his feet

He clowns around

But he’s no clown

No crown upon his seat

They laugh loud at him

Yet he laughs louder

Behind his jester grin

Because none comprehend

None so well as him

The state that they are in

His knowledge the fuel

That feeds the fire

Behind the Jester’s grin
